How to Unclog Bathtub Drains

Dealing with a blocked drain can be extremely frustrating. However, most people do not realise that this is a problem that can be easily solved without the need to call a plumber. A few handy tools around the house will be sufficient in clearing out the drain.

What can you do to clear out the blockage?

Most bathtubs drains become clogged with bits of hair or some other substances. The first step you should take when dealing with a clog is to try and observe what is causing the blockage and try to pull it out by hand. Obviously the idea of pulling out the substance yourself is not appealing by any means, however it will save you on a lot of expense if you decide to do so. If you cannot pull it out yourself you can try using a bended wire coat hanger or even a pair of tweezers.

Plunge the clog away

If the first method does not work out, the next step would be to try using a plunger. A plunger is a very useful tool for clearing the drain and has a high success rate. You should first put water in the bathtub to cover the bottom part of the plunger, block the overflow outlet with a rag, put the plunger over the drain, and push down and up four or five times.

The plunger method usually works in forcing the clogged material to move away. To test whether the clog has been removed, once you lift up the plunger the drain should clear away. If it has not then you may need to use the plunger several more times.

The ‘snake’ method

If you have tried using the plunger and it has not solved the problem, you should try using the snake. The snake is a long flexible steel cable that you guide into the drain whilst turning the handle in a dextral manner. If the clog is easy to reach then it will be easy to unclog. If not, then you will have to feed the snake through the opening of the overflow. This method should hopefully solve your problem. Once you have found the clog, you should continue to feed the snake through to find any other obstructions and to remove them.

In most cases, the plunger or the snake should solve your clog problem. However if you have tried these methods several times and not had any success, then it may be time to call the professional plumber.

Ways to avoid clogging up your bathtub

Most bathtub or sink clogs occur because of particles of soap or other substances that latch onto hair. You can also avoid causing clogs by not dropping bits of soap into the drain

It has been recommended that once every four weeks you should pour boiling water into the drain in your bathtub. This has the effect of melting any particles that build up

If you look around your house you will find useful household items such as baking soda or vinegar. These chemicals can also dissolve any other particle build up that causes the clogs
